I know, it’s hard to believe this car is about to have a huge impact on the entire auto industry. Well take a moment to listen to the rantings of a man that got into the argument that “lamps” get their name by combining “light and amps.”

There is a 2.7L twin-turbo V6 in this staid family sedan that’s making 325hp and 350lb-ft of torque. I remember a time long ago, perhaps December, when we bemoaned our midsize sedans going to exclusively 4-cylinder options. In fact, the only saving graces of the Accord and Camry from complete beigeness were that you could get them with a V6. Now granted the Altima, Legacy, 200, and Passat all have a V6 option but that’s not the point! The Mazda6, Optima, Sonata, Malibu, and current Ford Fusion offerings only have 4-cyl options. The amount of midsize sedans without V6s is so close to a majority that we can complain about it and freak out!

But here comes the Ford Fusion Sport. Not only does it bring back the V6 midsize Ford, it brings turbocharging to that V6 we thought would go extinct. Not to mention this thing is AWD, includes adaptive dampers, and starts at around $34k (maybe closer to $33k I’m hearing).

Now here’s the real reason I’m excited. The Fusion is one of the best selling sedans in the world and the average purchase price of a new car in the US is right where this Fusion enters the market. This thing is actually going to sell within one of the most competitive vehicle segments in the industry!

Think about it like this, Ford realized it can offer a Volvo S60 T6 R-Design for $10,000 less. The Acura TLX can’t match this. Like the Acura, you can get a Buick Regal Turbo GS AWD for the same price but you miss out on 66 hp (I believe the manual was discontinued for the 2016 Buick Regal, someone double check me).

Seriously, Ford just exploited a huge hole in the market and there is nothing competing against it. Everything around the Fusion Sport either doesn’t make the power or doesn’t have enough Prestige/Luxury to really be worth “stepping up” from a top end Fusion.

Better family sedan than a WRX? Hey, I didn’t say it! Much like Bruce Willis’ daughter, it’s just a Rumer!

Call it the Fusion ST, then make an RS with the 3.5. I’d be surprised if they price this at 33k instead of 40k, but that would make the Focus RS a tough decision. Sure you have more weight and no manual, but the upgrade potential would be crazy (new B5 S4!)

You can build the Fusion Sport on the Ford website right now, including pricing. Only thing not established is fuel economy (I know, I’m not supposed to care).

“The Acura TLX can’t match this.”

It doesn’t need to. The Acura is a luxury car.

I’ve never been more excited about a vehicle as I am about this one... Currently leasing a 2016 Fusion, have a year to go but plan to break my lease early the minute this car comes out. There really is nothing even remotely close to it in its class!

Acura is closer to being a luxury car than the Fusion is to being a TLX competitor.

Im in the market for a new family hauler this summer, and have no clue what i want. This thing seems to check all the boxes, yet i am not excited reading about it. Hmmm

Usually if you getting excited when reading about a family hauler, then it isn’t the family hauling aspects you’re getting excited about. I would check on finding a 2015 Volvo S60/V60 T6 R-Design since the used prices will match the Fusion Sport.

Well then be surprised - they already have the configurator online at Ford and it starts just under 34k dollars.

325 hp does not seem like that much. Furthermore you can get a Chrysler 300 S for the same price with all-wheel-drive and a rear will drive bias.

That also weighs like 600lbs more and basically makes close to 100lb-ft less in torque and has worse horsepower. I think anyways, I’ll have to Google and check the numbers.

I would actually put SHO badges on it since the Fusion is what the Taurus should of been from the start.

I actually dont think in real life the 3.5EB makes much more power than the apparently underrated 2.7. Its driving the portly Edge to 60 in the high 5s, and the even weightier F-150 in the mid to low 6s.

Unless, of course, you’re talking about the next gen 3.5EB.

Kinja'd!!! samssun > blpppt (Pat D.)

What they dial the turbos up to from the factory may vary, but .8 extra liters when you start dialing it up (or going to bigger turbos) is a substantial difference.

I don’t see them developing a whole separate engine if the 2.7 could do what they wanted...my guess is the 2.7 couldn’t provide quite the torque they wanted or spool what are presumably bigger turbos.

The next gen 3.5EB is rumored to provide up to 500hp for the new Raptor, it may just be that the 2.7/3.0EB are of this new generation, and the currently available 3.5 is of an earlier design.

I’m sure they upgraded the turbo size to hit 500hp. Easier/more efficient breathing up high, at the cost of spool (which the extra displacement helps with).
